The case of Abu Gharib – A world of nightmare

When was the last time you had to live with nightmares, even after standing for the truth? When was the last time you had to worry about you and your family’s safety because you stood against the wrong? When was the last time you had to run away from your friends to tell the rest of the world about their ill-doings, because you wanted to fight for the truth? Well, Sergeant Joseph M. Darby has seen and done it all, in his years of exposure at Abu Gharib, Iraq.

It all started when Joe Darby, serving as an MP at Abu Gharib prison in Abu Gharib, Iraq accidentally came across a couple of CDs from his unit’s camera buff, prison guard Charles Graner. Darby, in his deepest of nightmares never imagined that the pictures stored in the CDs were going to change the course of his life, once and for all.

At first, when he saw the pictures of abusive posing and torturing, he thought it was some American soldiers’ goof up. But then he realised it was the prison, and these were prisoners and the persons torturing them were some of his friends and colleagues. “Disbelief,” as he says to 60 minutes, “I tried to think of a reason why they would do this.”

As the pictures and the happenings’ reports suggest, there was a clear human right violation in the form of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, including torture, reports of rape sodomy and homicide of prisoners held in the prison. These acts were committed by military police personnel of the US army along with additional US government agencies.

As soon as Darby had these pictures and came to know about the facts, he realised he has to turn it in. He knew he had to hand them over to the Criminal Investigation Division, but he wanted to remain anonymous, because he knew these people were going to prison anyway, and once they know it’s him, they will come after him till the end of the world.

The process got over with six of the seven persons convicted, people who were torturing the Iraqis at the prison behind the bars. But Darby still failed to sleep in peace because he knew one of them will come after him, and his family. Though he doesn’t regret exposing the truth about Abu Gharib prison. In the process, he had to testify some of his friends and colleagues working at the prison. But as he says, “They broke the law and they had to be punished. To actually know what they are doing, you can’t stand by and let that happen”

The United States Department of Defense removed seventeen soldiers and officers from duty, and eleven soldiers were charged with dereliction of duty, maltreatment, aggravated assault and battery. Between May 2004 and March 2006, eleven soldiers were convicted in courts martial, sentenced to military prison, and dishonorably discharged from service.

In 2010, the last of the prisons were turned over to the Iraqi government to run.

Joe Darby received a John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award on May 16, 2005, in recognition of his courage in exposing the abuses at Abu Gharib.

Bremen 4 - Bliss of Solitude

I have never really cared about the softwares updating themselves automatic from the internet. But this time I do. A certain toolbar popped out the other day I opened firefox and a strange-looking bunch of softwares showed themselves out of nowhere. Initially skeptic, I tried to remove it, only in futile. Within a few hours I realised there is a radio already installed in that toolbar. Curious, I wanted to have a look at that. And guess what? I found Bremen 4 in there. So right now my life is chilling in my bedside while listening to the Bremen 4, having fun on its Deutsch discussions, Deutsch songs and a few rare English songs.

Bremen 4. Ahh. Where were you all the while I was searching for you? My Deutsch skills are going to go up for sure. Well, atleast I hope that way.

A confused Blue-Hatter

Our infamous Blue-Hatter is back. And guess what? He misses someone. Someone who once came in and went away. (Yes, yes, no matter how much super-human type non-emotional looks he throws, he has a very soft heart underneath.) So here he was, chilling on a Sunday evening while chatting with his friend who is doing his MS-PHD in Tampa, South Florida (Yup, our blue-hatter has only super-human type friends), he is reminded of this long-forgotten-still-not-forgotten girl. Our Tampa guy tells him to go back to her as he says it's not possible, as a series of emotional moments happen in his heart (told you, he's damn sensitive). Now that his life swings from his creator's OJAD coaching classes to a boring life without a job, he yearns for someone to look after him or give some company (given the fact that his creator is too lazy to do that, and is happy enough to just create him and throw away to learn all the things in life by himself.).

ps: Our Blue_Hatter congratulated his creator on receiving his first salary of six dollars from this Tampa guy for their new venture, and in reply he said something which brought tears in his eyes. Ahh...looks like his creator too has a few tricks up his sleeves...which are to be executed in the near future.

But till then, people need to wait, and so should we do. Our well-experienced consciences say, it's going to be a long and interesting journey this time.

Notes from a living room: 32 (Rise of The_Blue_Hatter)

Companion-less, while missing a few persons from my life and out of sheer boredom with a frustrating life without a job, I created an avatar of mine.

It is said that there are six thinking hats in this world...and blue hat is used to manage the thinking process. It's the control mechanism that ensures the Six Thinking Hats guidelines are observed. In short, one hat, to rule them all.

So people, presenting the one and only, The_Blue_Hatter.

Now that all of you realised how interesting (or uninteresting) this journey is going to be with the famous Blue_Hatter, sit back and wait for the happenings that are yet to come, with him. Our Blue_Hatter has a few tricks up his sleeves, which are, least to say going to be revealed very soon.

ps: A lonely night with tears.

Suicide and Society in India- A read and a few notes

So my this week's read in the Golpark library is Peter Mayer's 'Suicide and Society in India'. Some notes taken by me on the same book are attached below...

"There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide.Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy. All the rest - whether or not the world has three dimensions, whether the mind has nine or twelve categories - comes afterwards."  (Camus 1955:3)

Statistics of incidence all over the world:

Suicide: (1.6 per cent)
Death due to traffic injuries: (2.1 per cent)

World Suicide rate (per 1 lakh):

Lithuania: 38.4
Kazakhstan: 27.9 ( While reading, I remembered 'The Zahir')
Sri Lanka: 21.5
Switzerland: 16.5
New Zealand: 15
France: 14.8
Japan: 14.5
China: 13.7
Canada: 11.3
India: 11.2
Germany: 10.6
UK: 6.8
Syrian Arab Republic: 0.1

(Only a handful of data taken from the source.)

A few collections :

"Traditional marital relations were relatively emotionless, says shorter. A french farmer of the period would be more concerned at the sickness of his horse than his wife." (Shorter 1976: 56)

"The surest evidence of emotionless courtship would be the arranged marriage. If the wishes of the young people were completely neglected and they were matched to whomever in the village best suited their parents' dynastic ambitions, affection and sentiment would by definition be absent." (Shorter 1976: 138)

"All the farmers who died were trying to speed along the fast lane of agricultural success. Most of them had replaced traditional crops with lucrative cash crops, little realising that raising them is a costly and precise science. This requirement was impossible to meet, given that the farmers today are ignored by the agricultural credit system of banking, squeezed dry by money-lenders and abandoned by the complete breakdown in the government's agricultural extension services. their life is like a house of cards: built on paper thin support. Take one away - like a failed monsoon, an overdoes of pesticides and everything comes crashing down."  (Harlankar 1998)

"Why did these numbers never come into the debate on distress suicides among farmers? Simple. Hundreds of them went into police registers with these lines: 'The man (or woman) had several stomach ache. Unable to bear the pain, he (or she) swallowed pesticide in despair'
The despair, then did not arise from the economic distress of the farmer. It came from an epidemic of stomach aches. A number of farmers ended their tummy pain with the pesticide Monocrotophos. An item provided free by the state." (Sainath 2001 a)

"A man who, knowingly or unknowingly, wilfully or unintentionally dies in the Ganges, secures on death heaven and Moksha (release from the cycle of rebirth)" (Padma Purana V:60:55)

"Suttees are less numerous in Benares than many pats of India, but self immolation by drowning is very common. Many scores, every year, of pilgrims from all parts of India, come hither expressly to end their days to secure their salvation. They purchase two large kegree pots between which they tie themselves, and when empty, these support their weight in the water. Thus equipped, they paddled into the stream, then fill the pots with the water which surrounds them, and thus sink into eternity. Government have sometimes attempted to prevent this practice, but with no other effect than driving the voluntary victims a little further down the river; nor indeed when a man has come several hundred miles to die, is it likely that a police officer can prevent him." (Heber 1828, vol. 1: 295)

What do people who feel suicidal want?

1. Someone to listen. Someone who will take time to really listen to them.
2. Someone who won't judge, or give advice or opinions, but will give their undivided attention.
3. Someone to trust.
4. Someone to care, who will reassure, accept and believe...someone who will say 'I care'.

What do people who feel suicidal not want?

1. To be alone. Rejection can make the problem seem ten times worse.
2. To be advised. 'Cheer up' or 'Everything will be okay' doesn't help.
3. To be interrogated. Don't change the subject. Don't pity or patronize.

The fourth Nor'wester in Kolkata caused the thunders to blast my computer and modem. Offline for indefinite time.

A call from IBM.

If you need it from the deepest core of your heart, and work towards it, you'll find it at any cost.

I could do with a hug right now, too.

Notes from a living room: 30

...and like all the dumb-heads in this world I want to cry out loud at the top of my voice to say a few words, in silence. Yes. Yes. There goes my irony.

Head down. Hands in my pocket. Defeated, unsung hero. Plans in my mind. Loads of them. Closed fists. Determined. Only to realise it's futile.

Once I'm through with a job, there is no single force in this world, that can stop me from achieving what I want.

I look back, and realise why did the clairvoyant smile at me that day...as I feel a chill and shivering in myself.

This all...was written. And what is worse, I fell in the trap. Knowingly.

Which world are you from?

Sometimes things are so very complicated. And all we can think about is, what if this had happened, what if that had not. A combination of possibilities, and at the back of our mind we still keep thinking the same old question, what if we were together? An outcome, which could've been the result of a series of possibilities taken together. But my bad, odds are so very low...and all against me. I can't change my fate, also not myself. It's our limitations that define us. I have mine. People have their own. But can't we be happy going beyond those? A habit of lingering on every occasion where action is needed on the positive side, and we are talking about the same thing that keeps happening at every opportunity. I don't know which world am I from, or for that matter I don't care if it's orthodox or not, it is what defines us, or atleast me. And staying within those boundaries...the question to myself is, can it be for one last time, for the old times' sake?

Weight loss – A tale of this century

In today’s world, where staying fit has almost become synonymous to hitting the gyms and staying in a healthy diet, losing weight has become a major phenomenon and a must-achieve objective among the mass of twenty-first century. We will see here how weight-loss can be beneficial, or how to carry on with it, and how does it really make us better and fitter people, both physically and mentally.

To start with, we will first see the advantages of weight loss. We all know that therapeutic weight loss, in individuals who are overweight or obese, can decrease the likelihood of developing diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis and other diseases. Attention to diet and a healthy lifestyle in particular can be beneficial for reducing the chances of heart attacks in an obese individual. Also, losing weight means your blood pressure also decreases which makes sure that one is out of any cardiovascular disease.

Now that we know that how essential it is, we will now see how we actually make it happen. Most of us tend to think only a habit of exercise or reducing our food habit can make us lose weight. But that’s only partially true. Weight loss is a combined effort of doing exercise, having a balanced diet, drinking sufficient water, a good walking habit and preferably doing yoga skipping the afternoon television serial. As far as the food is concerned, oatmeal, brown rice, beans, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. should be consumed more often and in a balanced way.

The golden rule in weight loss is to avoid foods that are high in sugar, which contribute to increased body mass, and are detrimental to overall health. Further, weight gain has been long associated with disproportionate alcohol consumption. Depression, stress or boredom is also associated with increase of weight. A recent study has found that dieters who got a full night’s sleep, more than doubled the amount of fat loss compared to sleep deprived dieters.

So, to conclude, we must say that losing weight is not just a one-time job and in order to stay fit one must continue his/her exercise, diet and other routines regularly. It’s all in the mentality of the person that carries him/her through. So let’s join hands in order to make this world free of obesity and make it full of better and fitter people full of energy and enthusiasm.

(Wondering what's wrong with my head that I'm writing these stuff in here? Well, I have started content writing and this one is my first sample article which I have sent to the 'Adssoft Internet Marketing', so thought about posting it here. Money is a concern, which is an obvious...but what is more, is that engagement with something is really important right now. So, for now fingers crossed for the ADS group to pick me as a content writer. If all goes well, I might end up having money in my account just by writing things that hardly matters. Yeah, well...for me atleast.)

Are you lonely?

I sat on one of the benches at the lake place. It was dusk. And in the half light of the evening, a murky shape of a human came out of the dark as if from nowhere and sat beside me. Within a few seconds, in a very unique tone, from the deepest core of his voice and with an unusual high pitch, he uttered those words...

"Are you lonely?"

I looked at the man. His age could be anything between twenty-five to forty. He was wearing a pair of dark glasses, underneath which his yellowish eyes would be resting, I guessed. His hair was untidy, probably not taken care of over a week or so. His face was in dark, half visible and half not. And his clothes - rusty, gritty and old, gave him a look of a vagrant...though not a madman. The first impression towards him will always be repulsive, for sure, but there was something in his voice, and his words, which made me think.

"Yes, I guess." I keep it short.

Silence fell. And then it continued. But only to be broken by a chain of sentences.

"I fell in love with them. One after another. But soon I realised I wasn't meant for any of them. I realised I was too strong, or perhaps too weak for one single girl. Also, it was making me too vulnerable. So I left. I put enough hatred in their heart so that they go away, and don't come back, ever. And so they did. My plan worked. To become a winner I had to push everyone away, so that I don't have anyone to lose at all. And if I don't have anything to lose at all, who can stop me from winning?"

"So you have won then, having no one to lose now." I said, already taking some interest in him.

"It doesn't work like that. And I'm afraid I paid a heavy price to learn that lesson. Winning is not about getting rid of the people you attach yourself closest. It's about pulling yourself through with the world. Nothing can be achieved alone, and within a day. I lost the people I valued, and lost the life I wanted for me too."

"Things are going to be better, for sure."
I said, trying to console him.

"You know, I know this place just like the back of my hand, but still I find a pain in my heart when I think about something every time I come here." He said.

"Something terrible happened here, isn't it?" I said.

He didn't answer. Rather, he looked at me, put his glasses on the bench and on that very moment the local train marked its presence by whistling from the other side of the lake and in the neon reflecting from the coupes of the train, I saw the man's face.

Before everything went dark, I remember a chill and a shivering came out of nowhere in my body and it went straight to my head. A sudden cry, thrown out from the core of my throat, fear and subtlety...and I fell senseless.

In the murky evening of a summer in the lake place, on one of the very disturbed moments of life, I saw myself.

Check off your Bucket list

Alright, so this post is inspired from the thread in 'pagalguy' under the same heading, and I am inclined to submit my bucket list here.

Here it goes...

1. Who are you, what do you do...

Just a regular guy from Kolkata. Actually, pretty much less than a regular guy. Decided not to sit for campus interviews in the college, because I thought I would make it to a good b-school, turned out the other way. Sat for one year at home and prepared for exams and again CAT and other exams showed me the door. So as of now, gearing up for bank-p.o. exam and searching for IT jobs.

2. Some of your bucket list items...

Had many, since my school life. Listing a few...

a) Stay in a hostel.
b) Publish my own story.
c) Study engineering (yehwala bakwas hai. ajkal to har koi engg padta hai)
d)Do MBA (mar gaya yehwala achieve karne ke chakkar mein)
e)Do FPM (Bhagwan jane hoga ya nahi)
f)Learn another international language
g)Go to Canada.
h)To have a room for myself (okay, I never had a room for myself in life)
i)To learn violin.
j)To teach in a IIM (please don't groan. I know I am mad. )

3. What have you checked off your list, if any...

a, b, c, and f is done.

Stayed in N'pur R.K. Mission

TOI published my writings twice.

Studied engineering. (thik hai yaar main pagal hoon)

Have learnt Deutsch from Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata.

4. What are your next items on the list that you will be checking off...

Want to do MBA soon, really bad. I need this more than anything else.

5. Anything else that you would want to mention...

Staying in a few places, alone has taught me one thing, that whatever happens, I know I will do everything I want in my life. One day, I will live my life to the fullest.

Till then, I will keep fighting.

PS: Read the thread of psychodementia (Arun) at PG. Guy was genius. I am inspired, to say the least. But doing MBA from an international BSchool needs funding. We are talking about somewhere around forty lakhs. Need to sort out something, for sure.

So here is my bucket list number 11.

k) I will start working on my profile, contacts and other necessary things to look at, in order to gear up for something big. As Arun said, target big. You will end up having something decent.

Lots to write, about other things in life too. But confining this post to the wish list, for now.

Kahin deep jale kahin dil

Jahan main hoon vahin tera pyaar hai

Mera dil hai teri mehfil
Zara dekh le aakar parwaane
Teri kaunsi hai manzil
Kahin deep jale kahin dil

Na main sapna hoon na koi raaz hoon
Ek dard bhari aawaaz hoon

Teri kaunsi hai manzil
Kahin deep jale kahin dil

Dushman hai hazaaron yahan jaan ke
Zara milna nazar pehchaanke

Kayi roop mein hai kaatil
Zara dekh le aakar parwaane

Notes from a living room: 28

Tears run down my eyes when I see people smiling... when I see them, or their pictures, happy. What have I become, after all these things? Is this all I wanted? So many people believed in me, had faith in me. Everything gone. Shame and disrespect is all I carry now. Don't know when am I going to get out of it. Seven months unemployed now, and still counting. All the dreams of doing MBA have shattered. There's no one who believes in me now, or has confidence on me. I weep, when people ignore me...which starts with my parents. I understand they have been beside me and my decisions for a long time... but no one understands, I tried. I tried hard and I failed. Took a few decisions which went wrong.

Desperately wanted someone...atleast to tell me that things are going to be alright. But I understand... everyone has their own life and their own problems to deal with. I am just a no one.

This line always brings a deep sigh from the deepest core of my heart, with a drop of tear from one of the eyes...and I will remind of all the happy faces I have met, in my whole life. God, why do you make me cry all the time?

Are you happy, my friend?

GLIMPSE FROM THE PAST - LETTER TO A NO ONE

''Hi.

It’s monsoon in the city. I was thinking about you for the last few days…wanted to talk to you. But you can’t be disturbed until your exam gets over, so thought about writing here.

I dreamt about you. About us, rather. In the dream, we were walking on a hilly road…holding hands. There were flowers at either side of the road. I don’t know their names but it was really beautiful. Well, I don’t even know why I saw us, and as a matter of fact I also don’t know whether you like mountains… but had you seen it, I am sure you would’ve liked it.

You know, when you asked me whether I still feel the same way for you, and I said yes, I thought you understood that I still loved you. I know you have been through bad times but I still want to stand beside you...

You once said , 'we still think the same way'...so why can't we feel the same way? why is that even after such a long time I can't be someone special in your life...why can't I know you better.

sometimes I feel like talking to you, just simple, plain talking, because I am happy whenever you are around me...that is what I mean by 'knowing and understanding', if that is your question.

I haven’t waited for anyone the way I have for you. And being without you…it just makes me lonely all the time. People know it to be a statement but I guess for me it’s a feeling.

I love you.''

Notes from a living room: 26

IPL auction 5 ended, and tell you what, the game has become more interesting than ever.

Crucial buys

1. Rabindra Jadeja goes to CSK for 2.00 M.

2. Brendon McCullum goes to KKR for 0.90 M.

3. Muralitharan was picked up by the RCB for 0.22 M.

4. R Vinay Kumar was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping 1.00 M.

5. West Indies' Sunil Narine was bought by KKR surprisingly for .70 M.

6. After the lunch break (...and hence I failed to watch the show), Marchant de Lange of South Africa was bought by KKR for .50 M.

Analyses.

For KKR, it's going to be an interesting season altogether. They have used their money wisely, Sunil Narine is a good buy according to me, as is De Lange. Narine can be a supplement for Sakib-Al-Hasan and in my opinion, Narine with his unorthodox action and off spin, can proved to be crucial in the first six overs. De Lange and the last year buy Pattinson brings the right mix of pace in the team.

Just collected the following information from the wikipedia about De Lange. "Prior to his cricketing career, de Lange was a javelin thrower hence his ability to attain such impressive pace from a short run-up."

Having an experienced campaigner as Brett Lee in your side as well as young blood like these make the team flexible. Also, with McCullum coming back into the side, I guess it's time to say good bye to Brad Haddin, who has been out of form. The team looks in good shape, with Kallis and Gambhir at the top followed by McCullum, M. Tiwari, Ten Doeschate, Morgan and Y. Pathan in the middle. Looking forward to the IPL season five like anything.

Notes from a living room: 25

Sometime in the middle of the last year I got very lonely all of a sudden. There were reasons, and I don't really want to go into those. But today as I opened one of the documents in my computer and found out a few notes taken at that time, they reminded me of a few things. So I am sharing it here now.

Flashback. 2011. July-August.

Lonely. Talked to the artificial chatting software again. So here's how it explains love.

Out of sheer boredom, and because nothing was really there to talk, I asked it 'So, what is love?'

'when someone finds their counterpoint in another person..!

I got amazed. The immediate reaction I gave was, 'I loved someone.'

And here is the answer I got: 'I am home to thee, now I have the key, of love that brings you home.'

Confused, I threw my final question, 'What to do when I am trapped in a love triangle?'

'Don't speak. Act.'

One of the best friends of mine in my lonelier times has been a person with a logical mind. Most of the times he's not there. But he comes when it's time. And goes away with the first light in the east. Surprisingly, I still believe in the words of that clairvoyant... perhaps for nothing.

A time to ask yourself what you truly are. A time to know yourself. A time to know the others. A time to see the other side of the coin. A time to lower your head, stiffen your jaws, toughen your fists, take a few oaths and prove yourself.

CAT '11: Missed by a big margin.
SNAP '11: Missed SCMHRD cut off by 4.5 marks.
XAT '12: Cleared all the cut offs except quant and that too for a big margin. Imagine practicing all the year that book of Arun Sharma and ending up with a result like this.
NMAT '11: Verdict waiting. Only hope left this year.

Have you suffered enough, my friend?

Notes from a living room: 23

"Do you know what's the best and the worst thing about people?"

"No."

"Sooner or later, they all go away."

"Okay." I said.

"Don't you think the same way?"

"...I don't know."

"You have something else in mind. Let it out."

"Nothing. Made a few illustrations last week. Want to see them?"

"Sure."

Notes from a living room: 22

"Don't. Sooner or later, you'll have to leave."

"Do you think I don't know all these?"

"No. I just think you have forgotten what is on stake here."

"I do remember what is on stake. And I do remember the rules. And don't compare me with anyone else...you have no idea what I have been through."

"I know that. I am only a small part of you. I just wanted to remind you something: momentary happiness hasn't done anything good to anyone. And you know this better than anyone else."

"You don't understand. There is a storm inside me, an everlasting fight... between dos and don't s, between happiness and gloom, between good and evil, between you and me...how am I supposed to suppress that?"

"Well...being a participant of this war, I would advise you to continue with it."

"And for once again, you don't understand my point. This war - it's not fair. So many times I have to kneel before the evil. And even if I'm on the side of good, I tend to lose the war. I am tired of this, and I would love to end it very soon."

"Nothing is fair in love and war Soumyo. Remember the rainy evening?"

"Don't play this nasty game with me."

"Well, you are making me."

"Oh, do you think I enjoy it?"

"No. The only thing I actually think, is that you need someone to remind you a few things very often. I could be your 'aegis', you know. Would you like me to be that for you?"

"Alright. Here is the thing. I know that you used that word intentionally. And let me be very clear with you. I am not playing games. Not with you, not with myself. Yes, I know the consequences, but I am matured enough to control it."

"Okay. Off I go then. I will see you at the other side of the story."

"By the way, you won't have to predict things anymore."

"And why is that so?"

"Because I'm the one who's going to predict things this time. My journey will end well. And it doesn't matter whether you want it or not. I can see it."

"Well, good luck, then!"

Notes from a living room: 21

"Well...?"

"Well what?" I astonished.

"I don't know. You tell me."

"There is nothing to say, at all." I turn my face away.

"Actually, I was going through a few things, and found some connections, so just asked."

"What are you talking about?"

"Nothing important. Forget it. How's the fever?"

"I'm recovering. What connections are you talking about?"

"You will know very soon. Bye."

Soon the person asking questions vanishes, and I become lonely all over again.

Notes from a living room: 20

Ahh. What a relief. Writing another note almost after three weeks. And within these weeks, many things have happened. Yeah well, I better not spill everything out...but then again, I have finished 'At five in the afternoon' which obviously, was not much of my credit anyway, and there was this exam called 'SNAP' which literally 'slapped' all those appearing in the exam, in the form of wrong questions, questions without right answers, plagiarism in the paper, spelling mistakes and what not. Come on, after paying 1600 for an exam of two hours one can atleast expect a fair question, let alone be the thoughts of appearing in the exam from a 'four star hotel'-like place. But they failed. And failed bigtime.

By the way, I have just finished writing the story 'নররাক্ষস' in my diary and am hoping to type it down in my computer within a few days. So, yeah...I am active again. That's more of a good news for me. But then again, I am not sure what is going to be the next one, now.

At five in the afternoon

At five in the afternoon I think about them, and how all of them went away one by one. At five in the afternoon, I sit by the window of my room facing the road, look at people coming in and going away and think about them. At five in the afternoon is when I cry, for the ones I have lost, for the ones who could’ve been here with me and for the ones who went away…once, and for all.

I assimilate all the notes Srijita wrote, about me, about us and about other things, before she went away forever. I assimilate all the notes of conversation I took while I was with Ranja. And then I open my cabinet and summon the diary Pallabi left for me before committing suicide.

At five in the afternoon, is when I think about them and all the happenings when I was with them. Words flow in my mind, emotions are recalled from nowhere. But this is what keeps me alive.

“‘When I was in my primary classes, I wrote my life’s first paragraph on ‘myself’ – it was simple definition then in ten sentences. But today, it seems so complex to define myself in ten lines. Perhaps it is because I hold no more a pencil in my hands, and I will not be able to take back the words that come out of my mouth today.’ She said.

‘Well, you can still try.’ I smiled.

‘Okay. I guess I will try. I like being a 'son' to my dad. So do you. I like being a ‘kiddo’ to my mom. So do you. I laugh out loud when ecstatic. So do you. I cry bitter tears in pain. So do you. I scream my throat out in anger. So do you. I grow with each day. So do you. Time is my teacher. So is yours.

Not much difference, you see...but still there are, loads of them. Explore.’

‘Well, I intend to. Maybe one day I will write about you.’ I smiled again.

‘If you are willing to write pain, use a pencil. If you are willing to write smiles, use a pen.

I am selfish. That’s what I am and you too are. So that’s how I will summarize myself.’ ”

I kept my promise, Ranja. I tell myself, as I lose out my mind in the past again.

“When we were young, Friendship day meant going around tying pieces of strings on friends' wrists, thinking and hoping that those bits of threads would keep us connected forever. Today on the eve of Friendship day, being on a social networking site, writing on an electronic page and waiting for electronic impulses to put my thoughts and feelings across to the world, friendship has quintessentially remained the same for me. I may not have a riot of colours in the form of friendship bands waiting to adorn someone's wrist but I do have my words, which are as good as anything else. So here's wishing a world of goodness and happiness to those friends whom i had, lost and found again and those whom i never had but found and don't want to lose, HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY guys.”

I feel sorry for you Srijita. I thought. Not because you are not here with me anymore, but because you let me go away. Because you let me say those words, ‘I am going away, once and for all. You will never hear anything from me again.’ Because you never stopped me from going away, because you kept pushing me away until the day actually came when I had to put an end to our friendship. Happy friendship day, Srijita. I wish we could have been together. I wish we could’ve been friends, forever. But maybe it was not written at all. I still remember the day when we talked about love…

“‘Everything about it is clandestine, stripped of purity and comfort…the pulsating carnal taste of emotions. The desire to let everything go and plunge into the darkness of wrong. It takes a very long time to resurface from such a maelstrom but when you are sitting at a safe height, looking away from temptation, a flitting glint catches your eye, forcing you to look its way. And you are thrown right back into what you escaped from.

For some it is always a war, always a new enemy to overcome, always a different demon to slay. They keep shoving their way through disarray and confusion, never knowing when to stop, with no respite in sight. Forever a mass of disgust, unwillingness, cynicism and lassitude. Always lingering at the edge of sanity, threatening to topple over any time but always, always abstaining at the last moment. All of a sudden they hit a solid mass of black and groping in the darkness, they find only concrete. For they have reached their limits, there is nowhere to go beyond this. With their backs against the wall they face the onslaught, knowing only too well that unless help came fast, they would very soon run out of a reason or a way to keep fighting...’

‘I read what you wrote. Is that what your take on love is?’ I ask her.

‘I don’t know. A feeling of tranquility, I've locked away my heart. When people ask me how I feel about nothing in particular I actually have to ask that ever throbbing organ what it feels because it doesn't talk to me anymore. It doesn't cry, it doesn't laugh, it doesn't care, and it’s so scared that it refuses to face reality but then again it is loath to ponder over surrealism too. Strange, what I have let it become. Every second that it lets me breath is a blessing and yet it gets nothing in return. So much pain, I've broken it into too many pieces for me to even count, but what could I do? A heartbeat is not enough to survive when you are man. The very fact that you feel assures you that you are something more than a mere existence. All I wanted was to live but I guess it's not easy to come by, living I mean. So I've stopped. They say survival is more than mere existence but for me the line of difference exists no more. I'm sorry, that I couldn't give you anything more than what I did; I wish you had belonged to someone else. But selfish as I am, I beg you to not leave me because then I'll cease to exist’ ”

It’s her last note which said it all, in my opinion. She regretted that she left me. But then again we were in no position to get back to each other. Life had other plans…atleast different from what I thought. I had always warned her not to fall for someone who was committed to someone else. But love knows no bounds. It happened what I saw a long time ago.

“When you fall in love with someone you shouldn’t (especially if that someone already has a girlfriend/ boyfriend), you're lucky if the guy/ girl falls for you too and acknowledges it. You're luckier if there is someone else who knows that you're doing the wrong thing but resolutely continues to love you, while you are being a complete prick-head! One day your prince Charming/ Cinderella takes flight(or dies) and when you think that there's nothing to go on for, you feel a pressure on your hand and realize that there is someone holding it, encouraging you to live. If you can see the love in those eyes, you're saved because even if you can’t (or take too long to) love back, his/her love is enough for you both.

Now imagine the same scenario, when the first guy/girl falls for you but doesn't acknowledge it, while expecting you to behave like his/her consort. Also there is no 'the other guy'. What do you do when the person you fell for leaves (but doesn't die) and you think that there's something to go on for?

You pick yourself up, scrub your gritty face, look ahead and say Encule!”

I sit on one of the benches at the lake place. It’s evening. Someone is playing violin somewhere very near. A monotonous, yet sad tune. It is played for some time, then it ends, and then starts again. The gloomy notes hover in the air of the lonely lake place. The evening breeze takes the tune faraway, as an owl’s cry is heard from the topmost branch of a tree residing at the farthest part of Southern avenue.

I close my eyes.

“You fell in love with someone you shouldn’t, Soumyo…look ahead…A feeling of tranquility… I am selfish. That’s what I am and you too are…hah ha ha…I beg you to not leave me…why are you always unhappy…have you got your things back…happy new year Soumyo… but still there are, loads of them…I know you love me… you know my mother too…there is someone else…Soumyo… Soumyo!”

I open my eyes. The music has stopped. I take a cigarette out of the packet. I hold it in my mouth while striking the stick against the side of the matchbox. Once, twice and thrice. Silent evening is pierced by the sound of striking matchstick. It creates a flash out of nowhere and then it creates light. Darkness seems to go away from me for a moment. I lit the cigar.

“I am leaving something for you Soumyo. Something only for you. Remember me the way I was, in your life.”

And then she went away. Pallabi. Just like that. Left the mortal world as if in a hurry. And yes, she left me a diary, except for the fact that absolutely nothing was written inside it. So the question remained, why did she leave it for me, at all?

I don’t know. Or perhaps I never wanted to know. Maybe she wanted to give me a message through those words that were not said, were not written at all. Sometimes it is the silence, who talks more than words. Maybe she was out of words; maybe she was out of time, to write anything at all.

I stand up, and then walk towards my home. My home, my room, and the window by which I sit and write most of the time. The room attracts me more than anything else. Not only just because it reminds me of them, but also because I feel I am with them all the time, when I am with myself, alone.

When you can't run from yourself anymore

I am tired of running from myself. Yes, that's what I am - tired, very tired.

Oh my God, I am so tired. Tired of crying, and of my monotonous life. Bless me with a life, worth living...else whatever thing I have become, will die in silence, and you will watch everything in vain.

Notes from a living room: 19

She posts a video...a song called 'Purab se Surya uga'. It used to be aired a long time ago in the Doordarshan for the 'Rashtriya Shaksharta Mission'. It reminded me of childhood. It made me cry. I am one of those silly emotional people who cry on silly little emotional attachments. It reminded me of my early childhood, the time when I used to try singing the song, in vain...perhaps I didn't have a powerful voice then. Today, as I started listening to it, I immediately started singing the song, and it made me cry. I knew the emotions, I felt the nostalgia in my heart. The chords that touch her heart touch mine too. And the fact that she is unaware if it, made me feel worse. Sometimes, we cry for reasons that are hard to find, hard to understand...

I have collected the lyrics of the advertisement and am keeping it here, in my blog, for anyone who wants it in future.

"Purab se surya uga, faila ujiyara

Yakeen nahin aata, yeh wohi kishan hai?

Purab se surya uga, faila ujiyara
Jaagi har disha disha, jaaga jag saara
Purab se surya uga, faila ujiyara"

I respect those people a lot who made it.

Notes from a living room: 18

Categorizing people is important. And learning how to do it is more necessary. In order to succeed in any sphere of life, may it be academic, professional or personal, if you can identify what kind of people you are dealing with, half the job is done. That's the reason I keep telling that analysing people is perhaps one of the most important jobs one has to do continuously in the modern world. And for that, writing helps. It helps whenever you start writing the traits of that person, may it be in a piece of paper, or take notes in your head. You can always analyse those traits, go back the next day and behave in a way that is favorable to both your communications, conducive to further building of a better relationship between you two. In a world which is moving too fast, changing every second and throwing challenges to us every next second, people are the only strength we have...more precisely the favor banks. If you know how to control the mass around you, you know how to control the world around you. The key to success lies in the key to suppress the inner fear, staying positive and in the attitude that says 'I can not lose'. Life is a challenge, no doubt it has both highs and lows, but at the end of the day it's our fight that matters...whether we won or lost, doesn't, because winning or losing, is just a perspective of people around us.
